The instructions that come with the Garmin inReach Mini seem very straightforward, but based on my experience and those of others I found looking online, the process is more complicated than the booklet makes it seem. Common problems include:
- The loading bar never completes when trying to create an account and activate online
- The device obtains a GPS signal and sends the activation code but never receives confirmation, even when hard reset multiple times and placed on top of the roof for extended periods of time
Below are better instructions on how to activate an inReach Mini, based on what "worked for me".
- Plug in the inReach Mini. The device comes with a near empty battery.
- Create an account on explore.garmin.com. During the process you will need the device ID and code that appear after clicking through "Activate" on the Mini.
- At the end of the account creation process, a box will pop-up to show the progress. If you see no progress after a minute, click off the page and wait for the account confirmation email from Garmin.
- While you wait, download the Earthmate app.
- When confirmation has arrived, log into your account through the Earthmate app.
- Pair the inReach Mini with your phone.
- Go to ... (More) > My inReach and sync the device. This installs the latest firmware and any changes to settings you've made online, such as preset messages.
- Activate the Mini by clicking through the instructions on the device. Placing it in a window should be sufficent to obtain a signal. If it hasn't received confirmation within five minutes, there is likely still an issue.
